The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations require that all piolts with a Class 1 commercial licence and all air traffic controllers with a Class 3 licence must have an aviation eye exam performed by a designated aviation ophthalmologist (DAOs) or a credited optometrist (CO).
As anyone in the field of aviation knows, good visual function is necessary for the safe performance of aviation activities: pre-flight checks, take-offs, navigation, landings and the proper use of displays, dials, gauges, and maps in modern cockpits.
The eye exam is a required part of the medical certificate for Class1 or Class 3 licence and exams must be performed by a designated aviation ophthalmologist (DAO) or a credentialed optometrist (CO).
Please note: Medicare does not cover vision screening services and an examination and reporting fee will be applied. Visit the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's website for details on their medical certification process.

Yes, you can wear contact lenses or eyeglasses during the examination if you use them regularly. However, it's essential to bring your corrective eyewear to the examination to ensure accurate assessments of your visual acuity.
CASA examinations are not limited to pilots; they can apply to various aviation personnel, including air traffic controllers and others who play critical roles in aviation operations. The specific requirements may vary based on the type of aviation activity and the individual's responsibilities within the field.
A CASA examination typically includes a comprehensive eye assessment, visual acuity testing, colour vision testing, night vision evaluation and an assessment of ocular health. The goal is to ensure that individuals meet CASA's strict visual standards for safe aviation operations.
